READING LOG PROGRAM

Did you know that the latest research demonstrates that children who are held and cuddled by parents during story reading time become measurably better readers? Daily reading at home is important for a child's reading development. Every minute a child spends with a book brings them closer to becoming a fluent reader.

Borrow-a-book!
Each night, students in room 101 bring home a levelled book to read.  They are also able to chose from the vast selection of our classroom themed books for their viewing pleasure.

Reading Log
Students keep a reading log of all books read at home. This includes books they have read independently in addition to books that have been read to them. For every fifteen-minute block of reading a new entry can be made in their reading log.  This entry includes writing the date, the title and a book rating.

Weekly Homework Assignment
It is encouraged that each student records 3-5 reading log entries per week.  I check each student’s reading log every Friday to monitor the number of entries they have made.

Reading Chart!
Each student will also be bringing home a reading chart.  For every reading log entry they can place a star sticker in one of the chart’s squares.  When all the squares are filled with stars, they can place it in the Special Reading Mailbox in our classroom.  When this box is filled with 25 Reading Charts, our class will start planning our very first Reader’s Café!  The students also earn $3.00 in classroom money for each completed reading chart they bring in.  They can cash in these funds at our classroom general store.
