This week the students had Drop Everything and Read time daily. This routine started with a poem of the day. I read the poem to the students and asked them to share the mental picture that the poem had generated for them with the class. They learned that good readers make mental pictures while they read and how everyone's mental picture is different. When the poem was done, I let the students look at the illustration the author had drawn to accompany the poem. After the students had read independently or with a buddy for 20 minutes the students returned to the carpet to listen to one of their peers do a book talk. This has really helped the students share their love of reading with one another and help them when they select a book. This week the students also had the opportunity to read with their Kindergarten reading buddies. When this period was done, we all listened to the story, "The Dot" as Friday was named International Dot Day!
